October is Breast Cancer Awareness month. Over at the Diva's challenge, Laura is honoring her Grandmother who had breast cancer. The challenge is to use pink to honor someone you know that has/had breast cancer. I did zentangle inspired art to honor Laura's Grandmother, my Godmother, and my friend who all battled breast cancer and for my Aunt who had cancer but is luckily now cancer free.
While it didn't scan really well, the pink here has a little shimmer to it. I started by watercoloring the background and using a dip pen and india ink, drew my garden over the top. I used variations of Diva's Dance and Arc flower and the top flower is inspired by Charles Rennie Mackintosh. I think that someone has already done a step out for a pattern like it but I am not sure. I was going to shade with my prismacolor markers here but the paint really stopped that from happening. I'm not sure why, maybe the paint and the alcohol? but as I started, the marker picked up the pink as I went and was not doing nice things. So, I stopped and made a light wash with the india ink and used a small brush to shade. The outside shading is the marker.
I like the whimsy of the piece and even the pink (a color that I don't usually embrace). This is also doing double duty for my inktober drawing for today. Not too bad for a morning's work.
Thanks for stopping by and for all the wonderful comments each week. I appreciate them all, I just don't usually have time to go back and comment to everyone individually. Have a wonderful week!

Nosegay Zendala
This week the template at The Bright Owl was a doozy for me. At first I was totally stumped on what to do with all those circles and half circles. I almost skipped this one but I stopped myself. Then I decided to just jump in and do something rather than sit and look at the outlines anymore. Sometimes just starting is my biggest stumbling block. But you can't finish if you never start, so I bit the bullet and put pen to paper.
After making 12 different choices on a test page, I opted to start with Arc Flower. Then I decided that rather than filling the lower circles with tangles, I would give lines a try. As I went along, I decided that the result looked rather like nosegays. Then I needed to choose another flower for the other 6 circles. I just made one up after a few doodles. I say that I made it up, but it very well may already be a design already. I then drew lines to make the nosegay "holder" for that flower. I decided to just shade the spaces between rather than making it too busy.
I like this one but it seems a little unfinished to me. It must be however, as I can't think of anything else to do to the design.
Thanks Erin, for this week's template. It was a challenge for me all right. I had to stretch my mind for this one and I'm glad that I did.

Summer Zendala
Well, I'm back. It has been a little while since I posted anything. Summer, the kids out of school and vacation in the Adirondacks has kept me from the computer. That does not mean that I haven't been busy though.
I am in a mad dash to get work ready for a neighborhood craft fair, The Arden Fair, that happens on September 1st. I love this fair so much. It is up the street from my house and is really wonderful. For the very first time, I will be an exhibitor rather than just a visitor. So, my pen has been busy, busy.
But, you are here to see this week's Zendala challenge. This challenge was a lot of fun I have to say. At first I was a bit stymied as to how I was going to get started but once I decided to use Brayd, I had my "theme" and I went from there. This is the first time I have used Brayd in a circle and I have to say, I'm quite happy with how it turned out.
I did the center with Arc Flower next and then the Featherfall. I didn't stay in the lines with these two so I wanted to get their uneven edges done first. This is my first real go at Featherfall. It came out pretty good but no where near as good as some of you do it. I have to keep trying it and get better at it. That being said, I do like it here. Keeping with "natural" tangles, I chose Beeline, Raindotty and Fescu to finish it out.
I am really thrilled with how this one came out. The shading really added a lot of depth to it and well, I just couldn't be happier. I am going to see if I can get art prints made up for the fair.
Now, a late entry into Challenge 11. I had this one drawn in time but held of shading it. I was trying to work out some ideas that I had but then I changed my mind and went back and shaded it this week.
This one was all line work. I just couldn't think of a way to get tangles into this one. There is good space, I used the large size template, but I was just out of ideas. I think it was because I had vacation on my mind.
I do like it. I am calling it "Trippy Zendala" as it looks more like a visual test than the usual zendala.
I wish I could think of more ways to add some shading here. I think more could be done to play with the perspective but I'm stuck. I don't want to go overboard so I stopped while I was ahead.
Thanks for stopping by and taking a look. It has been very hot here and I'm sure where you are as well. I do hope that you are all staying cool, or warm for those of you in the Southern Hemisphere, and are having a great day.

Zendala Challenge
I'm a little late to the Zendala party that Erin is hosting over at The Bright Owl but I am glad I found my way there. The Zentangle community is awash with Zendalas these days and everyone of them is incredible! I have done a few and I have to say that I love them. I'm always keeping my eye out for a new pattern to use. I am NOT geometry inclined so creating my own is out. Thanks to Erin and her challenge, I can find a new pattern every week!
So, I am starting this challenge at week 4 and it comes with not just a pattern, but the added challenge of using the themes of sea and Mexico as well. Erin is on a vacation cruise in Mexico so you can see where her inspiration came from. (Totes jealous BTW). So, let's jump right to it!
When I looked at the pattern, all I could see were surf boards. The challenge of sea fit this nicely but then I wasn't sure how I was going to make surf boards. All I could think of were flowers, so I chose some bright colors and went for it. I'm not sure how "Mexico" this is though. It seems a bit more Hawaii.
Thanks for taking a look! I hope you are/had a great time on your trip Erin. Thanks for the challenge.

Trying on a new size
A long time ago I picked up some artist trading cards at the craft store. At the time I didn't know what they were. I just thought the little 2 ½ X 3 ½ inches cards were cute. They also come in a variety of papers so I thought it would be a great way to try out paper without a big investment. Last week I tucked a package into my purse along with a micron. My thinking was that I could pull them out at work when/if I get caught up and need something to keep busy. I am interrupted often at work so an ATC is great. A smaller size gives me smaller sections to work on, so I can fill them quicker and not worry about forgetting where I was.
So far I have finished one and am halfway through another. I love these little tiles because they are a great way to practice patterns, or try out new ideas. I know people trade these with each other but I have no idea where. If you would like to trade or can advise me where to post for trading, I would love to know!

Curiosities
I just wanted to do a quick post on where the pattern Curio came from. Here!
It's down there in the bottom right. I have an online friend who lives in Ogden, UT that has opened a new little shop. She asked people to send her postcards as she wants to post them all around her shop. I had a 5X7" piece of watercolor paper around so I decided to make her a tangle. I started with the word and went from there. You can't see it in the photo here, but Curiosities has glitter on the letters. I used the glitter pen from Sakura. This is the first time I used HighC's and am really excited what happens to it when you put it in squares. When I do it right it really looks art nouveau-ish. :)
Anyway, this was really fun to do. I might try some Zentangle inspired art with words in the future.

Sanibelle and NonDom Hand
Things have been busy around here. I got last week's challenge done but then was not able to get it up loaded in time. No matter, I shall subject you to it this week as well as the current challenge. Muahhahahahah!
Last week was a reappearance of a challenge from last year. The challenge, and a real BIG challenge for me, was to use your non dominant hand to draw your tile. I am a righty and a quite dominate righty at that. Not only do I write with my right hand, but when I think about it, I approach most things from the right when at all possible. My left hand is a great helper, and I would miss it if it were gone, but it is just a helper in this relationship. To start, I checked out some patterns that would lend themselves to a "messy" line. I get fussy about my drawings, so I needed tangles that would be OK (to me) if the lines were wobbly. I ended up choosing Purk, Ragz, Beaded, Scoodle, Arc Flower, Spaanders, and Umble (at least I think that it's called Umble). I did not try to shade it with my left hand or really, to fill in any spaces. I thought about using my right for that but then decided that I'd go whole left and keep it that way.

Now for this weeks challenge : Sanibelle. I really like this tangle. I have used it several times and always enjoy the outcome. My shell shapes are irregular and small and I always think that I am going to be frustrated with the final product, but I always like it. I set Sanibelle up in a very regular way so it ends up reminding me of wallpaper or ornate fabric. This is also really nice in a mandala. When I have used it in my regular way, the pattern works in each section to create a nice flow.
For the string, I wanted a bumpy look to mimic Sanibelle. I ended up changing it a bit as I went but it's still there. I started with Sanibelle in the middle as I wanted it to dominate the other patterns. After that I added Footlites (My first try at this pattern.), Shimono next and then finished the top with the lines. I was trying to add a little illusion there but it didn't really work. No matter, it seems to relate to footlites so I'll keep it. :)

Quadrifoglio Zendala
Hello everyone! Happy New Year! I hope that the holidays were good and restful to you all. Things were pretty busy for me up until Christmas but after the 25th, things got back to normal and I could relax a bit.
In the middle of all the Christmas preparations, I found a note in my sons backpack asking for silent auction donations for his school. I love his school for many reasons. One is that they do a fantastic job teaching and nurturing the children. The other is that they don't do fund raisers. I hate fundraisers. I know that they can be a necessary evil but they can be a drag. That look in your coworkers eye when you approach them with a sign up sheet often resembles a deer caught in the head lights. The school has found many creative ways to raise money for the school and I love them for it. This year the head of the PTA is going to try out a silent auction at the yearly spaghetti dinner. When I got the note, I wondered what we could do to help. Naturally I thought of making a zentangle or zentangle inspired art right away. A few emails later, and I was officially making art for the auction.
At first I had thought that I would make a Valentine's Day inspired piece as the auction is just a few days before. After talking it out and thinking it over, I was concerned that Valentine's Day theme might limit interest. I have been interested in zendalas lately so I figured that I would give one a try.
In looking for a pattern to use I came across Laser Forge Designs and their beautiful designs. I ended up using the Quadrifoglio pattern for my starting place. After staring at the traced out design for a while, I decided to just pick a pattern and get started.
I wasn't sure at first how many patterns I should use as I didn't want to get too busy. I kept Cadent and Bales basic to start. I figured that I could always go back and add some variation once I was done. I was doodling a copy of the pattern and found that Shattuck made a nice pattern when done "in the round" as it were. After that I looked for other patterns that would come out the same. Purk was a natural for the shape and Sanibelle is just beautiful here (I think.) The fourth presented a problem so I kind of made up a design. I added Arc Flower, Tipple, and Scoodle to the little sections at the edge. After I got the shading done, the whole piece felt unfinished so I went back and added variations to Bales and Cadent. I also thickened up a few lines to make them pop out more.
I have it all framed up and will deliver it soon. Here is the piece framed. Sorry that the photo is a little awkward but photographing the stuff framed is not easy.

I really enjoyed making this and am surprised at how quickly it went. I framed it in a 10X10 float frame, with a black piece of scrapbooking paper to fill the empty space. I had hoped to put it in a 10X10 with a 5X5 square cutout to frame it but I made the zendala too big and none of the premade frames would work. I waited too late to have it framed professionally. I was quite pleased with how it came out though. The paper had a black on black pattern on it and with the zendala in the middle it looked quite nice. The pattern on the paper was just enough to give it interest but not too busy to distract the eye.

I tried to alternate the dark and light patterns in this one. I tried a new pattern Golven and I really like it a lot. It isn't difficult to do and looks great. I look forward to using it again and again.
I am glad to report that both Cheryl and Kent enjoyed their tangles as much as I did making them. I hope that you enjoy looking at them too.

Punzel
This week there is a new tangle from Rick and Maria called Punzel. Naturally when I saw the email I knew that the challenge this week would be to use Punzel. This was a double challenge for me as I did not know Changing either. I still need to work out some kinks in both of these tangles but I think I have the gist of it. My swoops are a bit narrow and come out looking more like crescent moons than ribbon but that's OK. I think the effect makes it look a bit sci-fi.
I used my scanner to get this week's zentangle posted so please forgive the harsh quality to the image. There is no sun today and I don't think we'll see it for a few more days, so taking a good photo is out of the question.

Tangled on the Inside
This was a fun challenge. The Diva and Jo had us use one tangle pattern as the string and then fill the string with different patterns. I had done something similar with Bales in a previous challenge, so I wanted to try something different this time. I ended up using OOF as my string tangle and then went crazy inside.
Hopefully it isn't too busy to see OOF in there. I like the stripe on the sides of the tile itself as well as framing each tangle.

Breast Cancer Awareness
October is National Breast Cancer awareness month. Did you know? I didn't until this week's challenge from The Diva. I have had 3 women in my life to battle breast cancer. One was my Godmother Cam. She fought bravely but sadly was taken by the disease in the late 1980's. Another is my Aunt who has successfully battled breast cancer with a minimum of side effects. The last is someone I met on the Internet and who I think is truly the definition of hope, strength and courage. Julie is battling cancer currently and I have every hope for the best possible outcome. She is a beautiful person and I am proud to call her a friend.
It is these three women who I thought of as I drew my zentangles for this week's challenge. I will get to send Julie and my Aunt their zentangles, and will keep the one I drew for my Godmother as a reminder of her and her strength and love.
I started each of these tiles with on outline of a ribbon. After deciding on what tangle I wanted to put on the ribbon, I divided the remainder of the space behind and finished the tangle. I used the micron pen, a white and pink gel pen and pink colored pencils.

Pinwheels for Peace
Today is the International Day of Peace! Get out there and spread the peace because we sure could use it.
In honor of this day and the Pinwheels for Peace project, The Diva has challenged us all to create our own pinwheel. I was afraid that I was going to miss the deadline but I got in just under the wire! This was a fun and new way to create some zentangle. I chose to actually create a pinwheel and I found myself thinking more about what patterns to put together and how they would translate to a 3D page.
I ended up cutting a square of watercolor paper to tangle on. I am happy to report that my pinwheel even spins! I took it outside on this cloudy day to try and get a photo and the pinwheel kept spinning in the breeze. I just wish I had an outside pinwheel to tangle now.

Happy Birthday Friend!
This year I turn 40 as do many of my friends. To mark the occasion many of us have thrown ourselves a birthday party. I love it. It has been great to be with my wonderful friends and to celebrate this milestone with each other. I also love that almost all of them will be 40 before me. ;)
For my friend Steph's birthday, I decided that I would make her a Zentangle. I chose to do one in a 5X7 size. I waited until the last minute and wanted to use a standard size to make the VERY last minute framing go smoothly. I totally lucked out on the framing as they not only had one I liked, but Michael's was having a BOGO sale on the frame that I liked. I should have bought more as when I went back the sale was over. Oh well, I'll have to keep an eye out for next time they have one. I know know what frames to pick up.
Happy Birthday Steph! I love you my awesome friend!

Butterflies!
While working on my housewarming piece for my friend, I kept looking at the butterflies. I really like them in that piece. Plus, butterflies! So, I decided that I was going to work on a series of them. I have another friend that has a series of snowflakes at her house that are lovely. Hers are photographs but are small squares that are framed very simply. They look great in a grid on her wall.
So far I have done two. I decided to add a color to the bodies. So far I have silver and gold but will try some of the gel pens that I have gotten for the following drawings. I really like the two so far. They are light and elegant, to me anyway. I'd love to hear what you think!

Assunta - Challenge # 36
When the Zentangle email arrived last week, I knew a new tangle was waiting for me. I was excited that there was a new tangle to learn and also glad that it came after the weekly challenge had been posted. I like having a little time to play and work out a new tangle. At first, Assunta looked like it might be too complicated for me. But then I realized that Assunta would always be too complicated if I never tried it out. Boy am I glad that I did. I start with a penciled grid so that my lines are evenly spaced. My curves aren't so uniform but I didn't do too badly I think.
I really like the possibility of variation with Assunta. It can be dark if you need dark, or light when you need light. Lots of places to add texture as well which is nice. I enjoyed working with it and look forward to using it again soon! Thanks Rick for making it up. Happy Belated Birthday to Maria!

Challenge 30
This week the challenge is guest hosted by Christina Vandervlist. She has us using our initials as strings. I do this quite a bit as sometimes I'm at a loss of where to start. If I'm making a tangle for someone, I'll use there initial as a starting point.
As my initials are JL, I used cursive letters to add more interest to the shapes in the string. I was afraid that JL on top of each other would look like an inverted T. I tried some new tangles on this challenge and maybe developed a new one. I'm still tweaking it and need to come up with a name. :)

Tangle Pattern: Arc Flower
This pattern grew out of the need to fill a circle I had on a piece I was working on. I knew I wanted to use the arc/arches and made the center circle to give me a starting point. I was very happy when I was done. :)
